Islanders who think there should be a ‘General Election Now’ are invited to gather in St James’ Square in Newport at midday on November 5 as part of a national day of campaigning.
After a chaotic few weeks in Westminster, which culminated in Rishi Sunak becoming the UK’s third Prime Minister in four months earlier this week, campaigners are concerned that the plight of ordinary citizens is being ignored by their political leaders. Cross-party groups such as Enough is Enough and the People’s Assembly recognise that residents are facing a huge cost of living crisis, which won’t be tackled without a significant change in national leadership.
A spokesman for Enough is Enough, Isle of Wight, said: “Thousands of islanders are facing a winter of crisis when it comes to energy, wages, housing and cuts to public services. They are at crisis point and really worried about their families and their future. Many local organisations are pulling together to offer food, shelter and warmth for residents, which is fantastic. But to get meaningful change, to earn the confidence and support of the British people, we must have a general election and a leader who is elected by the people, not a small group of MPs.
“Everyone is welcome to join us on November 5 to make these demands. Bring flags, banners, placards and even a Guy Fawkes if you have one! Don’t stay angry and upset at home; channel your energy towards working with others for a more democratic future.”
