Lesley Walters, assistant headteacher at The Bay CE School, has retired after 36 years at the school.

She joined Sandown High School in 1988 as a PE teacher, moving to head of PE then director of specialism before becoming assistant headteacher. In 2005, Lesley successfully bid to get the school, then called Sandown High School, ‘Sports College’ status, something that contributed to many sporting successes from ex-pupils, including Jess Andrews, who competed at the 2016 Rio Olympics, and Simon and Stuart Moore, successful goal-keepers. The school has a fitness suite, named after former student, Louis Attrill, who won a gold medal for rowing in the Sydney Olympics in 2000. The Sports College legacy has led to the school continuing to top the Island sporting leagues today.

Staff got together to celebrate her achievements, and listened to messages from present and past colleagues. Students gave her a guard of honour as she left the site on her last day.

Headteacher, Emma Bowden, said: “Lesley has given her all to this school and we hold her in the greatest of respect.”
