The Island’s Maritime Voluntary Services has been presented with a High Sheriff Award by Kay Marriott at the Island Sailing Club, Cowes.

Kay said: “During the mourning period for the late Queen Elizabeth II, this local voluntary group provided a minimum of two volunteers throughout the period of mourning to look after the floral tributes laid in Church Litten, Newport.

“They attended every day and ensured that the placing of flowers was managed. In addition, they engaged with the public, discussing the passing of the Queen, and had the opportunity to hear many stories the public wanted to share. At times members of the public were upset and having the volunteers there to provide comfort assisted many people through their mourning.

“They also provided invaluable support in the delivery of the Commemoration Service held in Newport Minster the evening prior to the state funeral. This included forming the guard of honour at the entrance to the Minster for the invited guests and public.

“They provided a valuable service and were an important part of creating history. I thanked them by presenting High Sheriff Awards at the Island Sailing Club, who hosted the event, to thank them, and also for providing support at to the Round the Island Race over many years.”
