There is fun for all ages, as the 112th Yarmouth Carnival Week started with the raising of the flag on The Green on Saturday afternoon.
The Island’s Lord-Lieutenant, Susie Sheldon, officially opened the event, saying: “This will be another fantastic week, and thank you to the committee for giving everyone the chance to have a great time!” She was joined by the town’s Mayor, Debbie McCleary, who was also preparing to celebrate her 40th birthday later in the evening.
The week started with a four-mile fun run around the River Yar, involving 31 entrants with 28 finishing. Finn Maclennan was fastest runner overall; even more impressive as he was also in the youth category (23:22). Oleander Hall was fastest female runner (33:30).
Three runners, all from the Kingstone family, successfully completed the Red Lion Challenge, with a stop-off at the Freshwater pub!
The afternoon’s comperes were Miles Peckham and Anthony Davies.
During the week there was a lot more fun with river sports, treasure hunt, crabbing, boat racing, kite-flying, fishing, cycling skills and a dog and pet show. The Carnival Parade and prize-giving takes place tomorrow (Saturday) with High Sheriff, Graham Biss, judging the floats. Meet on The Green at 3pm for judging at 3.30pm, with the parade starting at 4pm. During the day, classic cars will be on The Green.
