Voluntary work celebrated at High Sheriff’s reception

The Island’s High Sheriff, Graham Biss, invited volunteers from many Island organisations to a special reception, on Sunday, to celebrate the work they do for the Island.

Holding the event in one of the marquees already erected for this weekend’s IW County Show, guests were treated to drinks, and an impressive spread of savoury and sweet treats, laid on by Graham’s wife, Sue.

During the afternoon he made a surprise presentation of three High Sheriff awards, to unsuspecting recipients, Mark Evans of Pyle Street Pantry, Helen Blake Edwards of Wight Aviation Museum, and Paddy McHugh of Newport Carnival. All were honoured for the unpaid and mostly unsung work they do to benefit Islanders and the Island community as a whole.

One attendee said: “It’s really nice to have the opportunity to get together like this, and talk to other voluntary organisations. So often we feel we are beavering away alone, when in reality there are lots of us working on so many different projects.”
