Tribute to the Queen

By Press Release Oct 28, 2022

A very special tree was planted this week in Pan Country Park by the Island’s Lord-Lieutentant, Mrs Susie Sheldon, with the help of some eager Brownies.

The silver birch sapling was one of the 350 that made up the Tree of Trees sculpture outside Buckingham Palace and was illuminated as the first in the chain of 1,500 beacons to celebrate the late Queen’s Platinum Jubilee on June 2.

The Isle of Wight Council, as owners of the park were also presented with the commemorative spun aluminium pot that the tree arrived in, which Lee Matthews, responsible for recreation and public spaces accepted.

Members of the Tenth Newport Brownie pack also planted another 12 trees elsewhere in the park, three each of Rowan, Hawthorn, Dogwood and Silver Birch, with the help of Karl Dyson, senior ranger from countryside charity, Gift to Nature.

Graham Biss and Brian Friend of Gift to Nature also attended the event. The tree saplings were all part of the Queen’s Green Canopy scheme, planned as a celebration of Queen’s 70 years on the throne, but following her death has been extended to the end of March next year for people to plant trees in memory of Her Majesty.

If you plant a tree in memory of Her Majesty then you can add a marker to the map on the Queen’s Green Canopy website: queensgreencanopy.org. There have been 59 trees planted so far on the Isle of Wight which have been included on the map.
