It may have been half-term, and the weather threatened rain, but there was a big crowd in Yarmouth for the annual pancake races on Tuesday.

For the second successive year, Lee Webb, of River Yar Boatyard, won the prestigious Shrove Tuesday Trophy for pubs and businesses, pipping work-mate, Henry Bolton.

Participants had to run around The Mallishag (Spirit of Yarmouth, Ryan Ingram) to complete each race which were, as usual, very competitive.

MC Anne Kyle, of the Yarmouth Carnival Committee who organised the event, said: “Thank you everyone for coming; we had a fantastic turn-out. It was just a pity about the weather.”

There was more pancake flipping in Ryde, with Peter May raising funds for local charities and promoting awareness of domestic abuse on the Island. Peter organises the ‘To Be In Her Shoes’ charity, and raises money by doing a variety of events in high heels.

He was supported by Ryde Mayor, Michael Lilley, Wootton councillor, Sarah Redrup, and charity supporter, Dave Darcy-Leigh, who all flipped pancakes in high heels. Peter said: “I actually won with 61 flips in a minute, but I’m used to wearing heels!”

The event, at St John’s Club, raised £152 towards a total to be announced this week.
