There is a three-day chess tournament in Ryde in April

A three-day IW Chess Congress is to be held at the Ryde Castle Hotel, between April 19-21.

The tournament has a capacity for 72 players, with the Open section including former English Chess Champion GM, Keith Arkell.

Tournament Director, David Lightfoot, said: “It’s amazing to see such support for the event; the Island has a thriving chess community and we can’t wait to welcome some of the best players from around the country.

“Our chief arbiter for the event is Shohreh Bayat, who was in charge of the Women’s World Championship Final in 2020 and can be seen at most high profile UK events.”

The event is being sponsored by Wightlink Ferries. The company also announced this week the 23 sporting teams and indivuals, 14 arts organisations, eight charities and six environmental groups that it will be providing with supported travel this year undier the Wightlink in the Community scheme. The list includes Ryde Rowing Club, which the company has supported since 1987, when it was known as Sealink.
