The Solent Swim, which raises money for the West Wight Sports & Community Centre, has been cancelled this year after the second attempt to stage the event was called off this week because of the weather.

The swim has raised around £250,000 for the centre since it first started in 2010, and was initially due to take place a fortnight ago, and after being postponed, was pencilled in for Monday or Tuesday.

However, centre manager, Clare GriffIn, said: “We are devastated to announce that the Solent Swim 2025 due to take place this week was cancelled. We feel this is the right and best decision for the safety of the swimmers and all involved in this event.

“Sadly, there are no more suitable tidal conditions and this was our last chance.

“We know there will be lots of questions and disappointed swimmers, but we would be grateful if you give us some time to discuss what happens going forward.

“All swimmers have been automatically transferred to next year, Saturday July 25, with a back up of Sunday July 26. Thank you for your support.”
