Islanders rally for Gizmo

A cat left with a broken pelvis, after being struck by a hit-and-run driver, in Newport, has undergone life-saving surgery, thanks to the generosity of Islanders who rallied round a family already battling cancer.

Gizmo, affectionately known as Gizzles, was hit by a car on Carisbrooke Road, in an incident witnessed by Shannon Corr, who saw the injured cat run to safety.

Determined to help, Shannon rushed Gizmo to a vet before managing to track down his owners and reuniting them.

However, the family were devastated to learn that Gizmo had suffered a broken pelvis and needed surgery costing around £5,500. With £550 already spent on veterinary treatment, the total bill reached £6,050. Without the operation, they were warned that putting him to sleep might be the only option.

The news came at an especially difficult time for the family, as Gizmo’s owner’s husband is battling brain cancer.

A fund-raising appeal was launched to help cover the costs, and Islanders responded with an outpouring of generosity, raising more than £5,600 by last night (Thursday).

The much-needed operation went ahead on Monday, and Gizmo has since returned home to his family.

Shannon said: “Seeing Gizmo get hit by a car was heartbreaking, and I just knew I had to help. I’m so grateful to everyone who supported the fund-raiser, and I’m incredibly happy that Gizmo is now back with his family.

“I’m forever grateful the community have all come together to help this poor boy.”
