Former Brighstone Primary School headteacher, Rebecca Lennon, who left at the end of the summer term after 19 years, wanted to give the children something unique and lasting to remember her time there, the creation of a Reading Bench.
Brighstone Men in Sheds rose to the challenge, designing and crafting a beautiful, solid oak bench using timber salvaged from a fence which was no longer needed in the cemetery next to the school, giving a new lease of life to materials which might otherwise have gone to waste.
The oak was carefully re-planed to rejuvenate the surface, before the bench was expertly hand-built. To finish, inscriptions were added using their laser-engraving machine.
As the shedders, explained: “This was an enjoyable project in which all members participated.”
Rebecca added: “It was a pleasure to work with Men in Sheds, and, from start to finish, their enthusiasm and passion for this and other projects was clear. Their skilled attention to detail has resulted in a quality finish that will be admired for years to come.
“The children loved seeing it once it had been installed on the school field, and I hope that they will enjoy snuggling up on it with a friend and a favourite book!”
