Night roadworks on busy routes

Island Roads will undertake a series of night-time road improvement works on busy main routes, during October and November.

St John’s Road bridge and Marlborough Road in Ryde, along with the Staplers gyratory system, at the junction of Long Lane and Godric Road, will all be upgraded. The work will take place between 7.30pm and 6am to reduce inconvenience.

An Island Roads spokesman said the project involves regular resurfacing that does not require deep excavations, allowing roads to reopen during the day. However, surfaces may be temporary initially, requiring extra care.

“We have worked with the Isle of Wight Council to agree this schedule of night-time works, which, as well as being undertaken at night, will take place during the winter months, outside the busy holiday season,” the spokesman said.

St John’s Road bridge will be repaired on Tuesday, October 27, ahead of new high-friction surfacing, in November. The Staplers gyratory system follows over three nights from Wednesday, October 28 to Friday, October 30, followed by six nights on Marlborough Road, starting Monday, November 2.

While schedules may be affected by weather or ground conditions, the spokesman added: “It is impossible to work on main roads like these without having some local impact, but working at night in October and November will, we hope, minimise the inconvenience.”
