Shanklin & District History Society (S&DHS) held their annual open day exhibition at the Falcon Cross Hall in Shanklin, with hundreds of residents and visitors dropping into the painstakingly researched event, with a focus on local events around VE Day 1945.
Society chairman, Mark Saunders, said: “Thanks to all for attending this free annual event, and to members for sharing an ever-growing archive and celebrating the history of Shanklin. The wide-ranging display included images of Shanklin Railway Station through time, and marks the end of World War II with a display of military artefacts.”
The exhibition also included correspondence from the time over the continued conflict in the Far East, with uncertainty about potential casualties should the ‘Forgotten War’ continue, and the stories that VJ Day uncovered.
There were also old maps and directories to help find out who lived in your house, plus a sale of local history books and old postcards.
