A group of volunteers helped lay 10-metres (33ft) of hedge in front of Dimbola Museum, Freshwater Bay, on Saturday.
The session was supported by Sean Adams, of the National Trust, and took place under the guidance of independent contractor, Tom Murphy.
It was a community project, funded by Freshwater Bay Residents’ Association, and, if funding can be sourced, another 10-20 metres will be completed next year.
The volunteers, including Boris Moscoff, Huw Jenkins, Bob Seely, Sue King, Kayleigh Ghiot and Jane Wilde, took around six hours to complete the project.
Hedge layering is an ancient skilled woodland craft, which has the function of stock proofing, but also of rejuvenating and refreshing hedges which have become ‘gappy’. The new hedge will attract insects, small mammals and nesting birds.
