Plans have been submitted for a new eight-bed ward extension at St Mary’s Hospital in Newport, aimed at improving patient care and easing pressure on existing facilities.
The application, lodged with the Isle of Wight Council under reference 25/01033/FUL, outlines proposals for a single-storey extension to the existing hospital building.
The new ward will include roof-mounted plant equipment in an enclosure giving it a two story ‘feel’ and an external staircase. According to the Design and Access Statement by Newport-based architects ERMC, the development is intended to “support the delivery of high-quality healthcare” and respond to “increased demand for inpatient services.”
The plans also include improved access routes, fire safety measures, and energy-efficient systems.
The statement also says that the new units location within a busy healthcare site means disruption during construction will have to be be carefully managed.
If approved, the new ward will provide additional capacity for the Isle of Wight NHS Trust, which has faced growing demand in recent years. Public comments on the application are open via iw.observer/planning-portal.
