The Isle of Wight Council has taken action to address the long-standing deterioration of the Esplanade Hotel, on Sandown’s High Street.
Despite new ownership in 2019 and approved plans for refurbishment, the prominent building has remained in a state of disrepair, negatively impacting the surrounding area.
A Section 215 Notice has now been issued, requiring the owner to carry out over 100 remedial measures to improve the property’s appearance within six months, effective from February 6. The actions required include clearing overgrown vegetation, repairing damaged render, and repainting the building’s exterior.
Councillor Paul Fuller, cabinet member for planning, said, “This notice is a significant step towards improving the condition of the Esplanade Hotel. We are committed to using enforcement powers to support the well-being of residents and maintain community aesthetics.”
Sandown Town Council is also collaborating on the efforts to improve the town’s environment and enhance community life, and the enforcement action was welcomed by the town’s mayor, Alex Lightfoot.
Local councillor, Debbie Andre, expressed cautious optimism, describing the Section 216 notice as “comprehensive”, but acknowledging the possibility of an appeal from the property owner until February 6. “However, if this intervention succeeds, it will bring much-needed improvements to this iconic building, benefiting both the seafront and High Street, and contributing to the regeneration of our town,” she added.
