St George’s School community in Newport is hoping to offer a warm welcome to military veteran volunteers willing to share their worldly experiences with students.
The aim is for the veterans to become role models for students, with positive impacts for both volunteers and students.
Many students are feeling the effects of the Covid pandemic and lockdowns when they missed out on essential social interactions and experiences. Some struggle with their well-being, with challenging behaviour and emotional responses. Others experience social isolation and find it hard to form strong peer connections in school.
A previous project, involving military veterans in another Island school, brought benefits to volunteers and students alike. Veterans were able to express and reflect on their values and pass them on to a younger generation. Reminiscing about their service with children had positive effects on their mood, reduced feelings of isolation, and improved their memory.
The students looked forward to the sessions, and teaching staff noticed a real change in their attitudes and achievements.
As a secondary special school for young people aged 11-19, with severe and complex learning challenges, the student population includes a diverse range of needs. For more information, you are invited to attend our get-to-know-you tea and cake event at the school in Watergate Road, Newport on Wednesday, January 10 between 1.30pm and 2.30pm.
