An applicant is seeking to construct an additional floor at 119 High Street in Ryde, which would allow the creation a ‘mansard style self-contained flat’ with three bedrooms.
The submitted papers say: “The proposal utilises the opportunity to construct an additional floor like the site opposite (116-118 High Street) which has been granted planning for a similar arrangement.”
The justification for the plans says: “This proposal will aid the Island in meeting the stipulated housing target as set out in the current Island Plan.
“The proposal in creating this additional dwelling will be achieved without disturbing the existing fabric of the building and with limited impact on the surrounding area.
“The dwelling will have the benefit of convenient shopping close by allied with adjacent public transport giving an alternative to the use of a motor vehicle.”
The flat would be available for market rent.
While Island Roads have not objected to the plans, there have been 11 objections from members of the public. Their concerns include disruption during construction, invasion of privacy and a reduction in light for nearby residents and the increase in demand for local parking, which is already in short supply. Several also raise fears about whether the building would be able to withstand the additional weight.
County Hall’s public consultation on the application 25/00643/FUL closes on June 9 and can be seen at iw.observer/planning-portal. A decision is scheduled for July 1.
