To mark the Netball World Cup being played in South Africa at the end of July, the Island’s Lord-Lieutenant, Susie Sheldon, and the Island’s High Sheriff, Dawn Haig-Thomas, took part in a friendly netball match between Shanklin Voluntary Youth & Community Centre (SVYCC) and Sandown Bay CE Primary School, with SVYCC narrowly winning a closely fought contest.
Mrs Sheldon said: “With the Island Games approaching, it’s good to see grass-roots sport alive in communities across the Island. Netball is one of the many sports that continues to evolve and develop in response to meet the needs of young people and older players alike.” “It was fun to play in an evenly-matched game,” added Mrs Haig-Thomas, “and good to find out the many ways that young people can take part in a sport that combines exercise and socialising.”

Presentations were made to the best players on each side, chosen by the opposing skipper. Maria Darbon received the award for SVYCC. Umpires, Dawn Alabaster and Charlotte Skeggs, were also presented with awards.
Jane Priest, who helped organise the event, said: “It was an enjoyable afternoon, and all the players would like to see it become an annual event.” Details of playing opportunities on the Island can be found on the Netball South website.
