Local DJ creates a cassette for MND charities

A local DJ, who has been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease, has put together a limited-edition cassette with a digital download for MND charities.

The album, entitled ‘MND Can Get in The Solent’, has been collated by David Baker and features songs by artists from the Island and Southampton.

David explained: “I grew up on the Island, and was in various bands prior to moving to Southampton. Over the years, I have met so many talented musicians, and after my diagnosis, I have been given the opportunity to ask many of them to donate a song to this compilation.

“All profits will go to the Hampshire and Isle of Wight branches of the MNDA, to fund research and support for fellow sufferers.”

The album will be launched on Wednesday (June 12), thanks to the efforts of Chalkpit Cassette Club, and features Island groups and musicians, including Coach Party, The Bees and Plastic Mermaids, and Paul Armfield.

The Island’s Chalkpit Cassette Club, founded by Silas Gregory, is known for its dedication to keeping cassette culture for the next generation of music fans, and supporting emerging artists to release their music physically on cassette again.

Silas said: “David is truly inspiring for the work he is doing, while also managing his diagnosis. We are thrilled to be able to support David, in putting together this compilation for such an important charity through the power of our local music community.”

David has raised nearly £10,000 so far by doing DJ sets, gigs with his band, Bobby I Can Fly, and a charity walk, with many of the events taking place on the Island.
