Vectis 40s Vintage is a group of like-minded people who enjoy the 1940s era, including its music and fashion and also raise funds for charities and other organisations.

After donating £200 to the Wildheart Animal Sanctuary in Sandown last year the group has now supported the sanctuary again to the tune of £300, with two more cheques to other beneficiaries to follow shortly.

In scenes reminiscent of a World War II blackout, the Hare and Hounds public house on Arreton Downs was plunged into darkness on Friday evening during the latest cheque presentation. An electrical failure in the area caused the outage which was partially eased with emergency lighting on the premises kicking in. After some semblance of order was restored the event went ahead in the much-reduced light conditions.

The group presented the cheque to the sanctuary’s events officer, Loz Lawton-Berry and Lily Gray, who joined the sanctuary five months ago as learning and discovery assistant.

Loz thanked the group saying that the cost of heating and animal feed had greatly increased recently so funds were really welcomed.

At the group’s recent fundraising event at the sanctuary second chef, Ian Lawton, created a 40s-type menu including Lord Woolton pie, bubble and squeak and apple and blackberry crumble using locally foraged berries.
