Lifting spirits at Hallowe’en with Figgy Gig

Mrs Snelling (Heather Whatley) on a food mission

by Jean G-Owen

Spooky stories, spell-binding sounds, crafty crones and a comical skeleton were the tricks and treats at Community Hall of Yarmouth & District (CHOYD) for last Friday’s Figgy Gig.

A warm welcome from ‘Magic Moments’ was followed by rhyme and reason from Emily Gillatt-Ball, and haunting stories from Holly Medland. Amy Jolliffe’s acoustic set added a touch of magic, and folk group sensation, Shtum, enthralled the audience with their nimble string-work.

The Triple Crones were down to two, but that didn’t lessen the trouble this double act stirred, as Ajeana (Jean G-Owen) told of poachers in petticoats and reading tea leaves, while Flamenco (Cheryl May) praised berets and prosecco. After months in prison, a skeletal Mrs Snelling (Heather Whatley) confronted an astounded parole hearing, who was more concerned that she’d poisoned her gaolers and fellow inmates. The evening was bookended, with songs about black adders and ghost riders in the sky from Jean, Cheryl, and Ross Westrop.

The next Figgy Gig, at CHOYD on Friday, December 6, promises to warm you up in time for Christmas. Contact Jean G-Owen on 07715 985689 or jean28owen@gmail.com for more details.
