The Island’s Sporting Opportunities team will be travelling to Birmingham, to take part in August’s Special Olympics GB Summer Games, thanks to a grant from WightAID.

The team have been awarded £8,200 and Sporting Opportunities chairman, David Tolley, said: “We’ll be heading to the iconic Alexander Stadium in Perry Barr, Birmingham, to compete on the national stage, and we couldn’t be prouder.

“Participating in the Special Olympics is about so much more than just the medals. It is about courage, connection, and the spirit of competition. This grant helps to cover getting our team safely to Birmingham, ensuring our athletes have a comfortable base to stay at while they compete also making sure everyone has exactly what they need to perform at their absolute best.

“For our athletes, this isn’t just a trip, it is an opportunity to represent the Isle of Wight, showcase their incredible talent, and challenge perceptions of what people with intellectual disabilities can achieve. This support builds confidence, fosters lifelong friendships, and turns dreams into reality.

“By investing in our athletes, you are investing in inclusion, community spirit, and the joy of sport. You have helped to remove the barriers that often stand in the way of our athletes, creating a platform where they can truly shine.

“To our amazing athletes, coaches, and volunteers, it’s time to prepare! We are heading to Birmingham, and we are going to make our Island incredibly proud.”
