ISLAND OBITUARY: Jim Baldwin

Wildlife enthusiast Jim Baldwin, who was renowned for his commitment to nature conservation, has died aged 67.

He was involved with iWatchWildlife, who said, via a spokesman: “We are deeply saddened to share the news that our friend and colleague Jim Baldwin has passed away peacefully with friends by his side at the hospice.

“Jim was cherished by many and will be greatly missed. His passion for wildlife recording and nature conservation inspired countless others to take an interest in enjoying and protecting our local nature.”

Jim was also involved with other wildlife bodies, such as the Hants & IW Wildlife Trust, the IW Natural History & Archaeological Society, the British Trust for Ornithology, the National Trust at Newtown, the People’s Trust for Endangered Species, Butterfly Conservation and the British Dragonfly Society.

He helped lead bird-walks at Newtown, was an expert on dragon flies and moths, and knew a huge amount about other wildlife, such as swifts.

Jim was born at Cranmore and worked in the accounts department at Plessey Radar/BAE Systems. More recently he lived in Wroxall.

A funeral service to celebrate Jim’s life will be held at 12.45pm on Friday at the IW Crematorium.
