By Isle of Wight ObserverBrave (or foolhardy) swimmers have taken to the sea this Boxing Day all
around the Island to freeze away the fat they put on over the festive season
and raise funds for charity.

Up to a hundred hardy souls gathered at Appley beach near Ryde to take a dip
in the icy waters of the Solent, in an event organised by Ryde Inshore Rescue
Service. £2,000 was donated to the service by the charitable arm of Yorkshire
Building Society, to provide the rescuers with FLIR (Forward-looking infra-red
cameras), which are a vital aid for locating bodies in the water. The event in
Appley was followed by a helicopter fly-past by the emergency services
Crowds also turned up at Ventnor seafront this afternoon, for the town’s
famous annual Boxing Day swim. A charity collection was made at the event
for the People’s Approach to Cancer Help (PATCH).
In West Wight, a swim was held at Totland Bay to raise money for the FYT
community bus service. There was also a Boxing Day plunge at Freshwater Bay
where a good crowd turned out to brave the wintery waters.
At Gurnard beach, the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust hosted a swim to raise
money for young people with cancer.
Finally, there was also a Boxing Day swim at Small Hope Beach, Shanklin,
accompanied by music from DJ Steppin Out.
However, if any of you somehow missed all the fun in the water in the
December swims on Boxing Day, a pirate-themed New Year’s Day swim has
been organised by the Wessex Cancer Trust. This will take place at the Salix
Cafe at Small Hope Beach, Shanklin. Fancy dress is encouraged for the event.
