Island animal charities unite to tackle welfare challenges

Some of the Isle of Wight’s best-known animal charities are discussing ways of working more closely for the benefit of animal welfare across the Island.

A meeting, held at the RSPCA IW’s headquarters in Godshill, brought together representatives from Friends of the Animals, Monkey Haven, the IW Donkey Sanctuary, Badger Trust IW, the Wight Squirrel Project and IW Cats Protection.

Discussions focused on the challenges they share, particularly access to veterinary care and opportunities for joint fund-raising. Organisers said pooling resources and expertise would help charities respond more effectively, while collaboration could strengthen community engagement and improve fund-raising impact.

A follow-up meeting has been scheduled for January, with hopes that more Island charities will join the initiative. The aim is to create a stronger and more connected network, to tackle both immediate and long-term animal welfare issues.

Steve Backhouse, branch director of RSPCA IW, said: “Bringing our charities together allows us to share knowledge, avoid duplication of effort, support each other and ultimately provide better care for the animals that need us.”

Helen Sinclair, founder of Friends of the Animals, added: “We are excited about the opportunities collaboration will bring, particularly in improving the speed that we can respond and help animals in need.”
