Even Conservatives think their party has made a terrible mess of things. The way things have been going, I wouldn’t have been at all surprised if the car carrying Liz Truss away from Downing Street had its doors fall off.
If I said anything to offend Bob Seely last week, it was purely intentional. Him and his lot truly deserve it. Bob’s about as useful as a one-legged man trying to stamp out a grass fire.
Having foolishly picked the wrong candidate for the umpteenth time, he’s now stuck with Rishi Sunak as his boss, and that ‘Island Deal’ Bob promised has bitten the dust. It always was a fiction, now like Bo-Jo it’s gone forever.
We won’t get the general election we deserve either so, reluctantly, we must wish Mr Sunak the best of luck; he’s going to need it! Labour has been pushing against an open door for months; ridicule can be very effective in politics, but it’s not a manifesto. Most normal people don’t really care about political tribes, we just want someone to competently get on with running the country.
My mortgage payment trebles next month. The end of our low-interest deal is bad timing and my fuel, food and utility bills have shot up alarmingly too – just like yours. The nation is in serious trouble, but it’s not all to do with hapless Liz trying to spend £5 billion on knocking a penny off income tax, nor the £60 billion pledged to reduce domestic fuel bills. As chancellor, our new saviour, Rishi, wasted £37 billion on Track and Trace, with no discernible impact whatsoever.
He handed another £4½ billion of our money over to furlough fraudsters. Covid and the war hurt us, but the elephant in the room is the £400 billion Rishi borrowed to get us through the pandemic. International investors downgraded UK Plc because we’re so heavily indebted. Four hundred billion pounds is roughly three years NHS budget, which along with everything else, looks likely to be cut again. If we’re agreed there’s a crisis, perhaps we should summon the Lib Dems? Actually, their collapse was extraordinary too; was that really all Nick Clegg’s fault, or were other factors at work.
They’re not very memorable, I do remember they once wanted a man from St Albans to be our MP, but that was years ago.
They also used to have some well-known names on the council, do you remember Shirley, Harry, Jill, Reg, Ernie or Marc? If they were still serious, the Lib Dems would already have a parliamentary candidate in place, relentlessly attacking our lacklustre MP and his circus government. Do the Liberals need reminding that Andrew Turner took the seat from them? Lib-Dem Peter Brand was Turner’s predecessor, so the Island can elect someone other than a Tory, we did so in the not-so-distant past. Andrew nursed the seat and built a loyal following and once elected responded to every email and letter. Labour’s Richard Quigley is a really decent bloke, but I just can’t visualise Kier and Angela Rayner running the country – although I do have a bit of a thing for her! In any case, having never voted Labour in decent numbers, is it asking too much of the Island electorate to get Richard over the line next time? The Greens have similar problems but thankfully, I have the perfect solution. Now is the time to get some agreement between all three of the parties about who best could get rid of Bob Seely. A unity candidate could easily win here. If the other parties are serious about removing Bob, they should select someone to do it – as soon as possible!
