Flooding frustrates football fixtures

Waterlogging weather decimated the weekend programme, with volunteers working hard to ensure some matches went ahead. Crowds were not disappointed by competitive encounters at Vectis and Shanklin, with Wessex points for Newport and Cowes.

Island Leagues

In IW Division One, Ventnor move to fourth place after securing a 4-2 away win on Vectis’s all-weather surface in Cowes. Robert Gee and Charlie Urry scored within 15 minutes for the visitors, and prolific Emmerson Tattersall, later sin-binned, made it 4-0 at the break. Ventnor’s finishing overshadowed Vectis’s greater possession.
A disappointing Vectis responded late through Joe Shaw and sub, Louis Newsham, exerting periods of pressure during the match but missing clear cut chances. When Ventnor’s Neo Lamb was red-carded, with 10 minutes left; they were unable to take fully capitalise on the player advantage.

Combination One saw the shock of the day, with 2nd-placed East Cowes Sports Res losing 3-0 away at Shanklin Reserves. The groundsmen worked from daybreak to ensure the pitch was match fit. Shanklin’s Finlay Lloyd scored from the spot after 12 minutes, with the score remaining 1-0 at the break. Harry Faulkner and sub, Jake Guildford, added two more. Although ECS battled to get back into the game, Shanklin created further chances and ran out deserved winners. Harry Faulkner’s twin, Thomas, kept a clean sheet in goal for Shanklin, who move to 9th in the division.

Wessex Leagues

Premier Division Cowes drew 2-2 away at Portchester, coming from 2-1 down at the break. Connor Kelly scored in the first half, and Scott McFarlane got the second to secure a much-needed point for the Yachtsmen.
In Division One, Newport won 2-1 at home to Verwood. Harry Catania gave ‘Port the first-half lead. Sonny Myram then scored his first senior goal on the hour, seeing the Islanders take 3 points, but they remain in 16th place.


In Wessex football, Cowes travel to Christchurch tomorrow. Vics are away at Aldermaston, and Newport travel to Frimley Green.

In the Gold Cup, Brading welcome Bembridge and High Park return to play Binstead COB. Northwood are at home to Sandown & Lake, in the Memorial Cup. Osborne Coburg play Newport Res, and ECS Res welcome Bembridge Res, in the Ken Morris Junior A Cup. Niton Res are at home to High Park, in the Junior B Cup.

In IW Division One, Ventnor play Shanklin in the local derby, and Cowes Sports Res are at home to neighbours, Vectis. In Division Two, Wootton play Seaview. In Combination One, 4th-placed Binstead Res play leaders West Wight Res, Sandown & Lake Res entertain Vectis Res, and Whitecroft & Barton Res are at home to Shanklin Res. In Combination Two, 8th-placed Newchurch Res play leaders Bembridge A, and Ryde Saints Res are at home to West Wight A.

Shanklin Ladies next play on February 25, and will be at home to United Services Portsmouth. Wight Eagles play the same day, at home, against Alton Ladies.
