Darragh plays havoc with Island sport

Bembridge's Lewis Wetherick heads, as Rob Iley and Sam Coe defend for Sandown

With storm Darragh playing havoc with hockey, rugby and football matches on and off the Island, ref Michael Power worked with players and volunteers to ensure the Sandown & Lake v Bembridge Reserves match could be played.

Hampshire Vase

With corner flags angled in the wind, Sandown pressed for much of the first half, building from a solid base of defensive stalwarts, Sam Coe and Rob Iley. Iley, who was booked alongside Ethan Dicker, George Johnson and sub, Shaun Kingston, attacked down the right. The ref awarded Sandown a penalty for hand-ball, and Jake Lester sent the keeper the wrong way to score the first goal of the match. Bembridge kept battling, with Lewis Wetherick levelling the scores with 10 minutes of the first half left.

After the break, the match was on a knife-edge, with both sides creating chances, but Sandown’s Lester scored his second and the winning goal on 60 minutes, with the final score being 2-1 to the Bay side.

Ladies lead league

Shanklin Ladies now top Division One after winning at home to United Services Portsmouth. In biting conditions, the Island side led 4-0 at half time thanks to 2 goals from Thea Broadhead, and 1 apiece from Mia Richardson and Faith Wagstaff.

After the break, Daniela Melninkaite added a fifth, and stalwart, Gemma Woodford, scored Shanklin’s sixth goal to ensure the points. Broadhead completed a hat-trick for the 7-0 win. The team went to the top from Farnborough, whose match was postponed.
