Cycle track bridge is set for a full rebuild

Cement Mills viaduct

A full replacement of the deck on Cement Mills Viaduct is planned for this September, as part of a significant upgrade to the Cowes to Newport cycle track.

The work, which will take around seven weeks, involves removing and replacing nearly 100 panels on the bridge, which have reached the end of their life. A spokesman for Island Roads said the new decking will be more durable and widely recyclable, offering a smoother and longer lasting surface for users.

The bridge, which spans Dodnor Creek, is a key part of National Cycle Network Route 23 and the Red Squirrel Trail, built during the Victorian era as part of the old Cowes to Sandown railway; it now serves hundreds of cyclists and walkers each day.

The structure must be fully closed for the work, and Island Roads is giving early notice of the disruption. The route will remain shut throughout the project, with a diversion via Horsebridge Hill and Stag Lane.

The timing of the scheme was agreed following discussions with Cyclewight, with work scheduled after the peak summer season. It must also be completed before winter, as the decking materials require dry conditions. The upgrade will be carried out by Island-based contractors, DDGA.

Project manager, George Lovelock, said: “It will result in a smoother, more sustainable and much longer-lasting surface.”
