Plans to rebuild the East Cowes fire station have been submitted to the Isle of Wight Council by the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Fire & Rescue Service (HIWFRS), sparking optimism among local leaders and residents.
The planning application outlines a modern new facility on York Avenue, which will include a response unit, fleet maintenance facility and car parking, will address fire response requirements for the north-east of the Isle of Wight, with alternative stations at least 15 minutes away.
The previous station was demolished in September 2024 after being deemed as structurally unsafe. With the fleet maintenance centre at Newport Fire Station also in need of substantial repairs, HIWFRS saw an opportunity to combine both facilities into a single, state-of-the-art location.
Local councillor, Karl Love, welcomed the move and emphasised the strategic importance of the station. He also thanked the local fire crew for their dedication during a period of uncertainty, and praised their loyalty to the community.
There have been a number of public comments posted on the website; to date all are in favour of the plan. Deputy Mayor of East Cowes, Cameron Palin, said: “Having a fire station is pivotal in keeping our town safe.” He also welcomed solar panels on the roof of the building.
The consultation on the application, which can be accessed via iw.observer/planning-portal, under reference 25/00696/FUL, remains open until June 16.
