Bumper crowds for Chale Show this year

The Chale Show enjoyed a bumper weekend with a revised layout helping huge crowds to enjoy the occasion.

It follows the disappointment of last year, when the Saturday was rained off, which had a knock-on effect on the show’s contributions to Island charities.

The show’s assistant manager, James Fothergill, said: “It was a bit quieter on Saturday because the weather wasn’t as good, but Sunday was a huge success. We needed a good weekend and got it and it has secured the show and its fund-raising.

“We had a few different changes this year which all went well. Probably the most watched was the stunt quads bikes, who really enjoyed the weekend and we had great feedback.

“We rearranged the site with a village green for families with story-telling, a kids’ zone and our fun dog show, making a nice open area for everyone to relax. The music stage was moved and there was plenty of entertainment, including headliners ‘The Hanging Baskets’.

“We also ran our own tea rooms this year, which will give us more money for charity which, we estimate, will be anywhere between £10,000-£30,000 compared to last year’s £6,000.

“The highlight of the weekend was the Chale Horticultural Society’s Show in the marquee with hundreds of entries in 250 classes. The overall winner with most points for bests in show being John Pearce. Niton Primary School won the schools and groups award with their entry.

“We’re already planning for next year and have some headline arena acts which will be announced in due course.”

The charity awards are announced by the Chale Horticultural Society at the end of the year and any Island charity is encouraged to apply for funding.
