The Indoor Season came to a climax, with a weekend of close competition at Cowes Community Club.
The event started with Steve Crockett, Sue Pragnell and Peter Dent having the edge over Steve Lewis, Dave Gustar and Ray Byham, winning out by just four shots 17-13 in the triple. This was followed by John Crews, who took an early lead against Jude Beaman in the Men’s singles, and ran out a comfortable winner 21–7.
The Men’s Plate Singles Final proved an enthralling encounter, with Paul Allo overcoming a 15–3 deficit, to beat Paul Green 21–15. It concluded with the thrilling final of the Australian Pairs, with John Crews and Martin Butchers, only winning by 1 shot after an extra end 17-16, against Steve Crockett and Keith Gosden.
In the final of the Pairs, Steve Lewis and Ray Byham started well against Max and Jude Beaman, and maintained their lead to run out winners 26–18. The Mixed Pairs final proved to be another tense game with John and Debbie Crews pulling out a victory 17–15, against Keith Gosden and Joyce Utteridge.
Experience saw Denise Butchers win a tight game against Gill Cameron in the Ladies Singles final, achieving a 21–18 win.
In the Two Bowl final their youngest member, Max Beaman (16), put up a great fight against the experienced Martin Butchers eventually losing out 14–21.
The Fours Final went all the way completing 21 closely contested ends, with Bill Pike, Keith Gosden, Tony Lloyd and Bill Pike overcoming Mervyn Locker, Len Rowley, Phil Smith and Pat Barsdell 20-16.
Steve Lewis, from the club, said: “Thanks to John and Debs Crews for organising the weekend of competition, for spectators for attending and supporting the players, and all participants, including Keith Gosden and John Crews, for reaching three finals, Max and Jude Beaman for reaching three finals between them in only their second season of bowling and promising much for the future.”
The presentation evening will be held at the Community Club on Friday, April 25.
