Lord-Lieutenant of the Isle of Wight, Susie Sheldon, joined local dignitaries at Carisbrooke Castle this week, to attend the launch of ‘Rose, Castle and Crown’ by author Patrick Crowley.
At almost 600 pages, the book is a meticulous and detailed account of the history of citizen soldiers from the Isle of Wight and Hampshire. It is sponsored by the Connaught Trust, and published locally by Medina Publishing. It tells the unique history of the Army Reserve, from the days of the militia to today’s reservists, and includes accounts of major conflicts, including the two World Wars.
Mrs Sheldon said: “The army reservist needs to be better understood and this excellent book highlights the part-time soldier, particularly in our counties, and I can’t recommend it enough.”
The launch included an introduction from Vice Lord-Lieutenant, Maurice Sheen, and a presentation and book signing by the author. Carisbrooke Castle features throughout the book. Those present were treated to a rare glimpse of a Connaught Sword.
Patrick Crowley will feature at the IW Literary Festival being held from October 5-8 at Northwood House. Copies of the book are available through local bookshops and the Connaught Trust, which provides grants for the cadet and reserve forces across Hampshire and the Island.
