Author visit inspires young readers new library opens at Greenmount

Pupils at Greenmount Primary School in Ryde welcomed local children’s author Peter J Murray last week to mark the opening of their new school library.

The £6,000 project has transformed the school’s reading space, creating a vibrant and accessible environment designed to encourage a love of books. Year 6 pupils met the author to discuss reading for pleasure, learn about his writing journey, and showcase the new library.

The library now features cosy seating areas, low shelving, and colourful décor intended to spark pupils’ imagination. A separate, smaller space has also been created for younger pupils in Reception to Year 2, helping them explore stories independently and build early reading skills.

Peter J Murray said: “It was a privilege to open the library for Greenmount School. We share a passion for inspiring children to pick up a book and use their imagination. The pupils and staff gave us a great welcome, as ever, and we look forward to working with them around their lovely new space.”

The project was made possible through fundraising by the school’s Parent Teacher Association, supported by donations from the local community. Rebecca Day, executive headteacher, said: “We’re absolutely thrilled to unveil our new library. It’s more than just a space for books, it’s a hub of curiosity, imagination and calm. Thanks to the amazing work of our PTA, we’ve made that a reality.”

The school plans to host author visits and reading themed events throughout the year, using the new library to support storytelling and creative learning across all year groups.
