‘Around the World in Eighty Days’ opens at the Apollo Theatre, Newport, today (Friday). The play is a celebrated modern adaptation by Laura Eason of Jules Verne’s classic adventure story.
Although first published in 1872, the tale has lost none of its excitement. There are 66 characters, 11 actors, trains, boats, fights, dances, a storm, a circus act and an elephant taking centre stage, as the mysterious and fabulously wealthy Phileas Fogg wagers his life’s fortune that he can circumnavigate the globe in just 80 days. Join him and his loyal valet, Passepartout, as they voyage from the misty alleys of Victorian London, across the subcontinent and on to the Wild West in a race against the clock.
Directors, Amy and Dan Burns, face their biggest challenge yet: Jules Verne’s epic tale of Victorian eccentricity and romance is brought to the stage in a production that’s fast-moving, entertaining and theatrical, full of action and colour.
You can catch the show on July 12-20 from 7.30pm (not Sunday or Monday). Tickets cost £10 for adults and £5 for students.
