A new wave of filmmakers on the Island

A new film school is launching on the Island in partnership with the IW Council, bringing film-making, photography, podcasting, and performing arts to aspiring creatives of all ages.

The IW Film School is dedicated to providing opportunities for youth, adults, and individuals with additional needs through monthly clubs, workshops, and in-school sessions.

At the helm is Laura Laurenson, a seasoned industry professional with more than 20 years of experience working on live sporting events, TV shows, and documentaries for global organisations like FIFA, UEFA, and World Rugby, as well as broadcasters such as BBC, Channel 4, and PBS.

Laura is passionate about the school’s mission, saying: “Nothing is more vital to the Island than opportunities for growth and development. With the new studios being built in East Cowes, the IW Film School is eager to ignite the creativity and talent of young and old alike.”

Youngsters won’t just learn how to make films and TV – they’ll edit, podcast, photograph, direct, and perform. Their creations will be showcased at screening events, fostering pride, ambition, and a sense of achievement.

At the heart of the IW Film School is practical, sustainable, and accessible learning. Laura explained: “High-end tech is great, but it’s not always accessible for everyday practice. That’s why we’ve chosen cameras, apps, and technology that students can use at home – so they can continue developing their skills beyond our sessions.

“We are focused on promoting positive mental health and mindful phone usage. Instead of endless scrolling, we’re harnessing technology for creativity – turning screen time into a powerful tool for storytelling.”
