A journey through Newport’s unseen heritage

By Press Release Aug 3, 2024

Newport Minster is to host an exciting new festival as part of the National Heritage Open Days scheme.

On September 7 the hidden heritage of the Isle of Wight’s county town will be celebrated in this unique free event, offering residents and history enthusiasts a unique opportunity to explore Newport’s rich past.

Working in collaboration with local organisations, the Minster has curated a day full of engaging activities for all ages. Historic buildings across Newport will open their doors for free, inviting you to uncover their stories through tours, talks, and interactive experiences.

A festival highlight is the launch of the ‘Remix the Minster’ project. Designed and delivered by local 16 to 25-year-olds, the initiative aims to bring a fresh perspective to the Minster’s fascinating history. Find out how the church is connected to an Indian princess and a seafaring adventurer and what marks they have left in the building.

The Newport Business Association is also encouraging local shops to showcase and celebrate their own histories, adding a wider dimension to the festival atmosphere. Car enthusiasts and history buffs will enjoy the Classic Motor Show, which will feature hundreds of classic vehicles on display at Newport Quay, providing a nostalgic glimpse into automotive history.

“We’re really looking forward to hosting this amazing event for Newport,” said Hannah Griffiths, community engagement manager at Newport Minster. “With a variety of activities designed to help people learn more and feel connected to Newport, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.”
Special guests will also be in attendance, sharing their knowledge and passion for local history, making this an unmissable event for anyone interested in the heritage of Newport.
