BOWIE DRUMMER Woody Woodmansey is to talk about his glittery life as a glam rock star at a very special ‘Evening With’ event coming up at Quay Arts this month.
The Yorkshireman helped propel David Bowie to fame and fortune in the early 1970s as the powerhouse in his backing band, the Spiders From Mars. Woody, together with Bowie, guitarist Mick Ronson and bass player Trevor Bolder, shared a house, studio and tour bus throughout the early 1970s – recording the seminal albums The Man Who Sold The World, Hunky Dory, Ziggy Stardust and Aladdin Sane.
Woody was right there in the thick of it when Bowie, playing out his Ziggy Stardust character, became Britain’s biggest and most notorious star. His drumming can be heard on many hits including Starman, The Jean Genie, Drive-In Saturday, Life On Mars?, John I’m Only Dancing and Changes.
His date with the Isle of Wight on Thursday, July 18 at 8pm, is his first visit to the island since he played the 2015 festival with Holy Holy – the Bowie-flavoured supergroup he formed with producer Tony Visconti and Glenn Gregory of Heaven 17.
Woody will be interviewed on the Anthony Minghella Theatre stage before taking questions from the audience and signing autographs.
The evening, will be hosted by Cowes man Andy Barding, co-owner of AAA Record Shop in Scarrots Lane, Newport. He has worked with Woody on several Holy Holy tours and he hosted a similar successful Quay Arts Q&A with Bowie guitarist Earl Slick last year. He has also written a number of books about David Bowie, and worked as a consultant to the ‘Iconic Images’ David Bowie exhibition currently running at Dimbola Museum and Galleries.
