Spooky half-term fun at Newport museums

Families can enjoy a spooky journey through history this October half-term, with themed trails, creative workshops, and hallowe’en activities at Newport’s museums and library.

Newport Roman Villa will open specially on October 21 and 28, despite being closed for the winter, offering visitors the chance to explore a themed trail, discover the Roman art of skeleton mosaics, and make their own hallowe’en masks.

At the Museum of Island History, in Newport Guildhall, families can follow clues to uncover mysterious winged beasts from history and mythology, before creating their own flapping creatures.

Sessions take place on October 20, 22, 27, and 29, from 10am to 1pm.

Both museums are offering entry and activities for just £1 per person, with no booking required.

Corina Westwood, the council’s heritage and libraries service manager, said: “These trails will provide a fun and engaging way for families to explore the past, uncover fascinating stories, and get creative together.”

Lord Louis Library will also offer three creative workshops during half-term.

Children aged six and over can make silly sock puppets, on October 19, from 2.30pm to 4pm, while hallowe’en rock painting, for ages five-plus, takes place on October 26, from 2.30pm to 3.30pm.

Children aged nine to 13 can make sugar skull masks on October 30, from 2.30pm to 3.30pm.

Library activities must be booked in advance by calling 823823.
