IW Observer readers have contacted us about two cemetery walls in recent weeks.
One of the pillars at Kingston Cemetery in East Cowes was knocked down on April 4 and has still not been repaired, and the wall facing the Quay at the bottom of Newport (Fairlee) Cemetery has been fenced off for some time.
Mrs Roberts said of Kingston: “People come here for burials and to remember loved ones. It doesn’t seem very respectful to leave the entrance is such an unsightly condition.”
An IW Council spokesman said: “The gates and wall at Kingston Cemetery have been surveyed and a feasibility study is being undertaken on how to best repair the gateway and walls either side, considering historical damage.
“The wall at Fairlee has not fallen down, however does lean and have cracks. Both walls, as is all our estate, are regularly monitored and maintained, and repaired as appropriate.”
