Riverfest sailed smoothly, as thousands of people flocked to a day of free fun and entertainment in Newport on Saturday.
Star of the event was CBeebies’ Swashbuckling presenter, Gemma Hunt, who brought some pirate shenanigans to the festival and heaped praise on the Island.
Gemma said: “Well done to Paddy McHugh, you and your team, for a hugely successful event. It was such an honour to be a part of Riverfest and see it absolutely brimming with guests and a great variety of stalls, entertainment and eateries.
“We have thoroughly enjoyed our time with you, and on the Island, and look forward to visiting again.
“The involvement from local groups and businesses was awe inspiring. It’s so encouraging to see ‘community spirit’ being lived out so faithfully as this symbiotic relationship serves everyone so well.”
Riverfest, a free community event, was run for the third year by Newport Carnival & Community Events Association.
The day started with the small Pirates Parade from St Thomas’ Square with a cannon opening fire to start the fun, as well as Huxley the Magician, Flash Kirby, Medina Marching Band, Fat Samba, Emilia and Aspire Creative with a lot of talented young musicians.
Paddy McHugh, Riverfest event organiser, said: “From the moment the Vectis Corps of Drums got the event started marching into the town from The Quay, I just knew it was going to be a great day.
“There were six to seven thousand people there, but it felt like more, and the traders definitely said they were busier than last year. It’s nice to know that we got something right and everyone enjoyed a fantastic day.”
