Ryde’s streets came alive with colour, rhythm and joy, as the Isle of Wight Mardi Gras 2025 unfolded in spectacular style on Saturday.
Twenty-four school and community groups from across the Island took part in this year’s celebration, themed ‘Our Folktastic Isle: The Wheel of the Year’, which explored age-old seasonal customs and folklore unique to the Island.
Blustery winds forced the cancellation of the giant puppet walkabouts for safety reasons, but crowds gathered to cheer on the procession of hand-made costumes, dances and props.
Among the highlights was a replica of a striking ‘Jack in the Green’ costume, last seen paraded through Ryde in 1865, and recreated for the weekend’s outing more than 150 years later. There is a reference to it in the Isle of Wight Observer on May 6 that year.
There was an array of costumes representing traditional Island festivities, from the unique Gilten Market, Shroving, Hoam Harvest, Mackerel Fairs and the mysterious ‘Snaark Stangs’.
The event formed part of the Isle of Wight Biosphere Festival, highlighting the Island’s UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status, and its commitment to harmony between people and nature.
A spokesman said: “The continued backing of our sponsors enables the Mardi Gras to bring people together through creativity, community, and celebration.”
