East Cowes Town Council and the Isle of Wight Council say they are encouraged by “significant progress” in the next steps towards procuring a new Floating Bridge, following what has been described as a highly constructive meeting with a senior government commercial lead.
The meeting brought together East Cowes town councillors, Isle of Wight Council leader, Phil Jordan, committee members, and senior officers to discuss the procurement framework for the long‑awaited replacement crossing.
According to both councils, the session provided clear guidance confirming that the authority can actively engage with potential contractors – including local suppliers – to ensure the specific needs of the River Medina crossing are fully understood and met.
A senior commercial lead from the government service said a detailed period of market engagement would be essential, given the complexity and level of risk involved. They added that speaking to a wide range of potential suppliers ahead of the formal procurement process would be key, provided this is done in line with the Preliminary Engagement provisions of the Procurement Act.
Both councils welcomed the advice and said they appreciated the opportunity to receive guidance at a high level. They said the collaborative approach would help ensure the next stages of the process are robust, transparent and focused on delivering the best outcome for residents and businesses.
In a joint statement, the councils said they looked forward to continuing the partnership as work progresses toward a long‑term, reliable solution for the Medina crossing.
