Island residents are being encouraged to clear out cupboards and return any borrowed mobility or care equipment they no longer need, as part of a new Isle of Wight Council amnesty.
The authority is asking people to hand back items such as crutches, wheelchairs, walking frames and other aids that may be gathering dust at home. Returned equipment will be cleaned, refurbished and made available for reuse, helping others regain their independence.
Danielle Marriott, operational lead at the Community Equipment Store, said: “Every piece of equipment returned helps someone regain independence and confidence. It’s a simple act that can make a huge difference. We know many people keep items just in case, but if you no longer need them, please bring them back. Together, we can make sure these resources reach those who really need them.”
In 2024–25 alone, more than 1,500 walking frames were returned, saving £34,648 by avoiding unnecessary purchases.
A wide range of items can be returned, including walking frames or sticks, crutches, bath lifts, shower seats, commodes, toilet surrounds and furniture raisers.
Donations can be dropped off at the Community Equipment Store, 19 Barry Way, Newport, Monday to Friday, 9am to 3.30pm, or at St Mary’s Hospital, where large blue donation bins are located at the main reception and in the physiotherapy department.
