On Saturday Girlguiding members, volunteers, and families gathered in Newport to celebrate World Thinking Day (WTD), an annual event promoting international friendship and reflection. This year’s theme, ‘Our Story’, encouraged members to explore the values of the Guiding movement, reflect on its past, and support girls worldwide.
A highlight of the day included the presentation of Girlguiding Long Service Awards to Jeanette Ralph (10 years), Helen Coleman (20 years), and Liz Tagart (40 years). Island High Sheriff, Graham Biss, surprised County Commissioner, Linda Stone, with a High Sheriff Award for her outstanding volunteering, recognising her years of commitment to 1st Carisbrooke (Princess Beatrice Own) Guide Unit and international Guiding events.
Young members participated in activities which included tasting global cuisine, crafting with recycled materials, and learning about worldwide Guiding. Organised by leader, Harriet Townsend, the Newport event, at Quay Street Methodist Church Hall, was open to all, from 4-year-old Rainbows to 18-year-old Rangers. An additional event in Sandown featured songs and fund-raising for Guiding worldwide.
Celebrated since 1926, WTD supports 10.8 million Guiding members in 153 countries. Girlguiding South West England encouraged its members across 16 counties to join in, with local events bringing communities together.
