There is welcome news on the employment front for the Isle of Wight, just in time for the festive season, as GKN Aerospace announced a major new partnership with Anduril Industries UK to develop next generation uncrewed aerial vehicles (UAVs) and rotorcraft technologies for UK defence programmes.
The strategic agreement, signed at GKN Aerospace’s Cowes facility on Tuesday, will target key government contracts expected in early 2026. The collaboration also includes Archer, whose expertise will support the delivery of advanced rotorcraft solutions.
Much of the work will be carried out at the Cowes site, taking advantage of GKN’s recent investment of £10 million in new cleanrooms, processing equipment, and training facilities. Already employing almost 1,000 people, GKN is the Island’s largest private employer. The new partnership is expected to create more than 100 highly skilled jobs over the next three years, with more on the way if the project proves successful.
Richard Quigley, MP for Isle of Wight West, attended the signing ceremony and welcomed the announcement. “This partnership is exceptionally positive news for the Isle of Wight,” he said. “It shows that innovative, high tech manufacturing and advanced defence capability are being developed right here, supporting local jobs and vital skills.”
Senior leaders from all three companies emphasised the importance of collaboration. Dave Bond, senior vice-president of Defence Technology at GKN, described it as “aerospace innovation at its best,” combining manufacturing expertise with Anduril’s defence technologies to deliver rapid solutions for the UK Army. Rich Drake, managing director of Anduril UK, praised GKN as “a trusted partner in British manufacturing,” while Archer’s CEO, Adam Goldstein, highlighted the strength of the partnership in bringing together autonomy, rotorcraft technologies, and industrial capability.
