The organisers of the historic Gilten Market have confirmed that the event will return in 2025, after it was cancelled this year due to restrictions aimed at halting the spread of Blue Tongue disease.
It had been planned to hold the event on December 3 at Salisbury Market, but complications with venue arrangements and animal transport restrictions forced the decision to pause the long-standing tradition.
Matt Legge, chairman of the Gilten Market committee, described the cancellation as “unfortunate but unavoidable,” and acknowledged the challenges involved. He explained, “We’re grateful to Tapnell Farm for hosting in previous years, but this year we were unable to secure a licensed alternative venue.”
The market, which is steeped in tradition and famously gilds the Island champion animal’s head in gold paint, will return to a soon-to-be-constructed building on the County Show Ground in Northwood next year. Despite the setbacks, the committee is keeping preparations going holding a local training event at Sibbecks Park, in Whitwell, to provide younger participants with vital experience.
Meanwhile, the Annual Gilten Dinner is still on the calendar for the New Year, with more details to be announced soon.
Mr Legge further highlighted issues which continue to test the farming community, such as rising costs, inheritance tax changes, and adverse weather conditions. “Our priority remains maintaining the Island’s agricultural economy and ensuring access to local food for the community,” he added.
