The Isle of Wight Donkey Sanctuary in Wroxall has announced that work has begun on their new visitor’s café. The stone barn will be transformed into a welcoming area with over 100 seats.
A new patio area at the back will enjoy stunning views over the Wroxall valley and stream. There will also be a new purpose-built toilet block between the café and the shop. It is hoped that it will be open by next May, and then next winter work will start to upgrade the shop and adoption facilities.
A spokesman said: “This is the biggest investment we have made in the sanctuary, even though we are keeping costs to a minimum by creating a rustic barn with a minimalist decor. We have worked hard to improve living conditions for our animals with a new barn extension, a new sand barn, a new stable block and new field shelters; it’s now time to look after our visitors a little better so that they can enjoy warmth, shelter, some nice hot and cold drinks and food, all in a rustic, farm environment.
“During the build, we will still be open and we need you all to continue supporting us. Our shop and existing cafe will continue trading, though the stone barn next to them will be sealed off. Entry to the shop will be through the marquee and will be signposted.”
