Darren’s dahlias delight the judges

IW Observer gardening expert, Darren Everest, struck gold at the weekend’s Blenheim Palace Flower Show awards.

Darren admitted: “The weather might be hot and sunny now, but it wasn’t long ago that we had a very cold start to the year. It didn’t help me with my dahlias which were running around two weeks behind schedule due to the conditions from the new year into early spring.

“However, despite this early setback causing a delay in my planting out, I staggered the timings for my blooms and, with an improving change in the weather, I was able to put up a superb display. Just a week earlier, I only had two blooms in colour in my polytunnels, so to get a full display out on the day was nothing short of a miracle!

“I can’t quite believe that I was able to even put up a reasonable display let alone be awarded a Gold. After what was a very difficult winter it just goes to show with a bit of luck and good fortune anything is possible!”
